O Holy Family

A song of consecration of the home to the Holy Family of Nazareth, imploring their protection against the wounds of sin, the spirit of the world, and the trials to come.

About this song

Inspiration

This song is a family consecration directly addressed to the Holy Family of Nazareth. It does not tell the story of the Holy Family: it implores them. As 'God First Served' invokes the intercession of Saint Joan of Arc, this song invokes that of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph for every Christian home. The author wrote it in the first person so that every father, every mother, every spouse can make it their own prayer. The expressions 'my home', 'my family', 'my children' are intentional: this song invites each person to consecrate their own family, here and now.

Central message

The song follows a deliberate spiritual progression. It begins from the concrete wounds of contemporary families (separations, divisions, rejection of the faith, the disappearance of prayer) to lay them before God without condemning persons. The Holy Family is then invoked as a living intercessor, not as a distant model. The refrain 'Jesus, Mary, Joseph, protect my family' forms the heart of the song: a litanic invocation comparable to the ancient popular prayers of the Church. The song also addresses the spirit of the world, generous openness to life, the vocation of parents as first educators in the faith, the return to the sacraments, and perseverance in trials. It concludes with a true consecration: entrusting one's wife, children, home, weaknesses, and entire future to Jesus, Mary, and Joseph.

Theological structure

The song is rooted in the Catholic doctrine of the family as domestic Church (CCC 1655, 2204; Lumen Gentium 11), in John Paul II's teaching on the family (Familiaris Consortio, Gratissimam Sane), in the spirituality of Nazareth as described by Paul VI during his visit in 1964, and in the long tradition of acts of family consecration encouraged by the Church since the 19th century. The Holy Family is presented according to Catholic faith: not only as a model to imitate, but as a living intercessor, following the Catechism's teaching on the communion of saints (CCC 956). The conclusion 'Make my home a new Nazareth' summarizes the entire spirituality of the song: Nazareth as the first Christian home, sanctified by the presence of Christ, a model of prayer, work, simplicity, and love.

This version

O Holy Family of Nazareth,
Turn Your merciful gaze upon my home.
Jesus, Mary, Joseph,
protect my family.
In the separations that wound hearts,
In the divisions that shatter charity,
In the injustices that bring us tears,
In the rejection of faith under my own roof,
When prayer grows silent in my home,
When the Gospel is no longer heard,
Come restore what sin has broken,
And lead my household back to God.
O Holy Family of Nazareth,
watch over my home.
Jesus, Mary, Joseph,
protect my family.
May Christ be King
Within my home.
When the spirit of the world enters my home,
When it teaches fear and stirs up selfishness,
When it closes hearts to the gift of life,
And makes us doubt Divine Providence,
Free us from all that draws us away from God,
Make my heart generous and trusting.
Teach me to welcome my children
as treasures entrusted by Heaven.
Teach me to lead my family to God,
Not only by my words,
But by my prayer, my example,
And my faithfulness to my duties.
Make me a guardian of the faith,
A witness to the Gospel within my home.
May my children learn through my life
to love the will of God.
O Holy Family of Nazareth,
watch over my home.
Jesus, Mary, Joseph,
protect my family.
May Christ be King
Within my home.
Bring my family back to the Sacraments,
Keep us faithful in the state of grace.
May none whom God has entrusted to me
be lost far from His love.
Lead my wife and my children
on the narrow path that leads to Heaven.
May our home seek not only peace,
but the eternal salvation of our souls.
You who have known exile,
Poverty, danger, and the night,
prepare my family for days of trial,
For the battles I cannot yet see.
When faith is rejected,
when Christ is despised,
Keep us standing firm in the truth,
faithful until the end.
I entrust to You my wife.
I entrust to You each of my children.
I entrust to You my home,
my struggles, my weaknesses, and my future.
Keep us united
in peace and charity.
Make us live
in the union of hearts.
Jesus, Mary, Joseph,
protect my family.
Make my home
a new Nazareth.

This is such a beautiful and tender song...sadly, I do not listen to any contemporary songs anymore they cloud my thoughts and it's hard to listen to that new age spiritual music when it's all of this world $$$ so to have this music that seems to be created from the words of God is such a grace!! So now I can listen to music again, thank you Mat!
